MisOr's Roman Catholics install new head

CAGAYAN de Oro City--A Chemical Engineer was installed Friday morning as the new head of Misamis Oriental's over one million Roman Catholics following the official retirement of Archbishop Antonio Ledesma, 77, effective Aug. 28, 2020.

Amid the COVID-19 anxiety and stricter observance of “social distancing,” Archbishop Jose Cabantan, 63, D.D. was installed sans the pompous revelry other than the applause of witnessing priests and laymen of the Roman Catholic Archdioceses of Misamis Oriental.

Local government officials, the immediate members of the family, friends, visitors, and invited guests also witnessed the installation at the St. Augustine Cathedral in Cagayan De Oro City just as the city celebrates its Feast Day of St. Augustine.

Archbishop Jose Araneta Cabantan, 63, D.D. a Chemical Engineer, was ordained a priest on April 30, 1990 at St. John The Baptist Parish in Lagonglong, Misamis Oriental.

On February 17, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Cabantan as the Bishop of Malaybalay, but was ordained Bishop on April 30, 2010 before he was installed Bishop at the San Isidro Cathedral in Malaybalay on May 15, 2010.

A native of Lagonglong, Misamis Oriental, Pope Francis installed Cabantan as the Fifth Archbishop of Cagayan De Oro City on August 28, 2020. The first Archbishop of Misamis Oriental was the late Archbishop James Thomas Gibbon Hayes, S.J., who served from March 16, 1933 until his retirement on Oct. 13, 1970.

The Archdiocese of Misamis Oriental covers 62 parishes covering the province, Cagayan De Oro City, Camiguin and part of Malitbog, Bukidnon with an estimated Roman Catholic population of over one million.
