THE city government of Cagayan de Oro will be partnering with
different schools for the implementation of the Department of Education’s
(DepEd) Senior High School (SHS) Program Work Immersion Partnership.
The 18th City Council headed by Vice Mayor Raineir
Joaquin V. Uy is now reviewing the proposed Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with
Xavier University, Liceo de Cagayan, Lourdes College, St. Mary’s College and
Corpus Christi School for the purpose.
In his letter to the legislative
body, Mayor Oscar Moreno said the program will promote and enhance the skills
training of senior high school students and prepare them for college. He added
that it will also provide them with the necessary work experience if they
choose to seek employment after graduating from senior high school.
The objective of the partnership is
to supplement the formal curriculum of the SHS program with special inputs,
develop the knowledge and skills of
students that are relevant to the needs of the job market and provide SHS students with relevant
learning experiences by giving them exposure to the actual workplace setting.
PROVISIONS
Under the proposed MOA, the schools
shall identify the SHS students, make the needed adjustments to contextualize
the Work Immersion subject and designate a person in charge of coordinating
with the city and supervising the activities of the students, among others.
For its part, the city government
shall assign a competent Immersion Coordinator to liaise with the school and
supervise the students without prejudice to the special parental authority of
the school, provide inputs into the curriculum and lend its expertise by making
available its resident resource persons to provide training to the students.
Noting the opinion of the City Legal
Office that the ordinance is in order, the committee on education chaired by
Councilor Suzette Magtajas-Daba favorably endorsed the legislation to the
committee on laws and rules chaired by Councilor Ian Mark Nacaya for
appropriate action.
